The Behavioral Health Therapist works with marginalized clients who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, and have experienced toxic stress, domestic violence, abuse and/or neglect. The Therapist works with VMP clients in a variety of settings, including both adults and youth in individual, family and group counseling. The Therapist will also teach life-skills classes to adults, as well as training volunteers and staff in trauma-informed care and trauma stewardship. This role is a foundational part of the success of single-parent families reaching their goal of self-sufficiency and stable housing while in the program.
Responsibilities
• Reach out to clients to engage them in counseling services and classes.
• Facilitate group classes- focused on life-skills, parenting and boundaries.
• Carry a counseling caseload, working with both adults and children.
• Track client data, communications and attendances electronically and maintain high standards of confidentiality.
• Attend weekly staff meetings, trainings on trauma-informed care and stewardship, motivational interviewing and conscious discipline, to apply these skills in daily work with families.
• Partner with the VMP team to identify mental health needs and assist with care by referral, or counseling clients in individual, family or group services.
• Communicate, to the Behavioral Health Director, any perceived risks or discrepancies with VMP clients.
• Act as a mandated reporter on all incidents of abuse, neglect and safety.
